Key Requirements for a Canadian Visitor Visa

In the Canadian visa system, there are two types of visas based on citizenship status. For citizens coming from visa-required African countries like Ethiopia, a Visitor Visa (TRV) stamped on the passport is issued; whereas for citizens from Europe and other visa-exempt countries, an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) that links electronically to the passport is provided.

The main difference between the two is that the eTA is issued within a short period (usually within 24 hours), while the passport-stamped visa can take from 30 to 90 days or more, depending on the country. Additionally, while the passport-stamped visa can be issued as Single Entry or Multiple Entry based on the applicant's request and the final decision, the eTA is generally valid for multiple trips for up to 5 years and allows for a stay of up to 6 months per visit

Key Requirements for a Canadian Visitor Visa

Before applying for a Visitor Visa, clearly establishing the purpose of your trip to Canada is the primary step. The main reasons for traveling to Canada on a Visitor Visa include:

  • To visit Canada as a tourist.

  • To visit family living in Canada or to attend social events (weddings, christenings, graduations, and funerals).

  • To participate in business meetings, conferences, and training sessions.

  • To participate in sports competitions.

With the exception of the first reason (tourism), all other reasons require submitting an Invitation Letter sent from Canada.

While an invitation letter is necessary, more importantly, applicants must provide evidence guaranteeing they will return to their home country after completing their visit. This evidence must demonstrate the applicant's strong Home Ties. For example:

  • Family Responsibility: Being married and a parent; supporting retired parents or dependent family members.

  • Employment Status: Having permanent employment that generates a good income.

  • Social Ties/Influence: Professional prominence or social influence within the country.

  • Economic Ties: Ownership of a business, property, or assets.

Additional Guidelines:

  • Passport: Applicants must hold a passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining to apply for a visa.

  • Entry Decision: Obtaining a visa from the embassy is akin to knocking on the door to enter Canada. Since the final decision to allow entry is made by the Border Services Officer at the airport, one must be prepared to provide appropriate answers to questions asked at the airport
